Your Questions Answered

Does my child need speech and language therapy?

All children develop at different rates and have strengths as well as things they find difficult. However it is natural to compare to other children, particularly when you are concerned. There are some resources here, that I hope you will find useful; but please do contact me for more information or to arrange an assessment.

How does speech and language therapy work?

I will work directly with you and your child to provide a holistic assessment to identify their strengths and needs. Therapy will be engaging, individual to your child as well as following best practice principles. The sessions will involve working directly with your child, with you as an active part of the session. I will then provide a range of strategies, games and resources for you to continue to carry out the activities with your child until the next session.  All assessments and therapy can be adapted to your child and family’s needs.

Where will the speech and language therapy take place?

I provide speech and language therapy primarily at your home, where children are most comfortable. I cover Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire (some excess travel charges may apply). I also often work in a child’s nursery, pre-school and school where agreed with a family.

In response to the recent social distancing guidelines I am also able to offer remote Teletherapy as and when required and appropriate.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

There are currently no waiting lists for assessment or therapy. I aim to contact you within 48 hours of receiving your email, and can usually offer an appointment within a few weeks, at a time to suit you. You will receive your summary and recommendations after your assessment. I can usually offer follow up therapy sessions immediately after the initial assessment, as required.

My child sees other professionals, can you work together?

Of course; it is important that all professionals are able to successfully work together to provide the best support for your child. I frequently work closely with local speech and language therapist within the NHS, Sirona and Virgin Care. I also work closely with teachers, nursery staff and other professionals such as occupational therapists.

Does speech and language therapy make a difference?

Absolutely.  There is a wealth of research which shows that speech and language therapy is effective for a wide range of difficulties even from a very young age. I always ensure that I use evidence based techniques and am up to date with the latest training and approaches. I ensure that all speech and language therapy is directly with you and your child as well as specific for your child’s individual strengths and needs.
